Want an Instant Statement Piece for your Kitchen?

What better way to create an instant statement piece in your kitchen than to have a custom range hood! It truly makes the space more thoughtful, luxurious and personal. Whether it is wood or metal, it is a design detail that I enjoy creating for my client. Below are four custom hoods that I had the privilege of designing. Take a look! What is your favorite?

Starting off with this rustic Reclaimed Pecky Cypress wood hood at #kpdvestrace. The beam above the the hood sets the stage to show off this beauty. It is also made from reclaimed material.

Next up is a cold-rolled steel hood for #kpdsouthwood. The client is in the steel industry which is where my inspiration was taken.

For #kpdbrookwoodroad, I designed a simple painted wood hood to match the surrounding cabinetry.

My most recent hood installation was a mega copper clad structure at #kpdsmyerlake. The home features an abundance of wood surfaces. Using metal provided a much needed contrast while creating the most amazing statement piece.

Before & After Laundry Room: LOADS of Colors

Two boys that play sports, five dogs and three other humans living in this Mountain Brook home produce a lot of laundry!! Perrie already had two sets of washers and dryers, but her hanging was shoved in what use to be a half bath, an auxiliary refrigerator was blocking a window and the original cabinets were no longer meeting her storage needs.

I was given the task of bringing function and fun to this otherwise dark and dank room. I started the design by removing the wall between the Laundry and the former half bath. I added laundry basket storage, hanging space and a dog wash. With the help of Paula Coldiron, who was working part-time with me, Perrie’s personality, love for Lily Pulitzer and the color yellow were realized in her new Laundry Room!

Before - original cabinets had been painted dark by the previous owner.

Selecting a Paint Color

Color selection can be daunting, I KNOW!!! Years ago when Universal Khaki (Sherwin Williams SW6150) was gaining popularity, I specified a similar color - SO I THOUGHT! The client approved, my boss at the time approved and the specifications were written and given to the painter. WELL!! I received a phone call from my boss saying, “Bring your sunglasses,” because the color looked like a sunflower on the wall. OMG!

As you can see, the two colors are hardly similar!!!

Needless to say, I no longer write paint specifications without testing the desired colors on the wall or cabinets.

Factors that can influence the appearance of a paint color:

  1. Natural light

  2. Time of day

  3. Type of lighting in the space: LED, Incandescent, etc.

  4. Other finishes in the space

  5. Brand of paint

  6. Sheen

I suggest paint be tested on large sections of the wall on various walls in the same space. If that freaks you out, then paint samples on poster board. Living with the samples for at least a week will give you a better sense of the final result.

3 Must Haves to Create a Spa-like Master Bathroom

Self-care is more than a buzzword in this Master Bathroom renovation! Words like spa, retreat, luxury are better descriptive words that I would use to describe this AHHHHHHH-Mazing space!

The three must-haves to create a spa-like Master Bathroom:

  1. A soaking tub is a must for me personally! I love to relax in a hot bath. The soaking tub I used in this master bathroom is from Signature Hardware.

  2. A steam unit was at the top of this homeowners wish list. We had to use two Mr. Steam units due to the size (volume) of steam required for this wet room’s footprint.

  3. Two shower heads!! Oh yes! No more hogging the hot water!

Before the tub as you see below was in the room all by itself. The shower was tucked into a 3’x3’ hole on the other end of the Master Bathroom. What a transformation!

Top 5 Favorite Bar Stools

Islands are increasingly popular in today’s kitchen designs. My top five favorite counter height bar stools are listed below.

  1. Zentique has an acrylic framed stool with a cow hide seat. My jaw dropped the first time I saw the stool! I knew it would be perfect at the island in a Vestavia kitchen renovation.

  2. Keeping with the acrylic theme, Gabby Home has a counter stool with an acrylic seat and brass legs. The clear seat is comfortable and easy to clean. Throw a sheepskin over the seat for added texture.

  3. Another easy to clean option can be found at Target. The Carlisle Metal Counter Stool is available in several colors giving you a fun accent at the kitchen island. The counter stool is lightweight making it easy for small children to move in and out as needed.

  4. Natural materials are trending in the Interior Design industry and with that comes my fourth favorite counter stool from Arteriors. The Richmond Counter Stool is made with flat woven rattan. The weave is a traditional cane pattern that has been made current by it’s exaggerated scale.

  5. Another natural material being used for kitchen seating is leather. The CB2 Roadhouse Leather Counter Stool boasts a comfortable seat with a back.

Having seating at the kitchen island invites your family and guests to sit and stay awhile!
